Empakai Crater Rim Campsite

The Empakai campsite sits on the forested rim of Empakai Crater in the northern highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the western rim rises to about 3,200 metres. Below you a deep soda lake covers much of the crater floor and draws flamingos, and from the rim you look out to Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Rift Valley and Lake Natron. It is simple camping with few facilities, so tours bring everything, and the walk down to the lake takes about an hour.
