your journey
This ten-day camping trip takes in almost everything the north has to offer: the big game parks, the quiet Ngorongoro highlands on foot, the Rift Valley at Lake Natron and a night climb of an active volcano.
You start with a walking safari and a night game drive in Tarangire, then spend six hours on the Ngorongoro Crater floor before a night at the Maasai village of Nainokanoka. Next morning you walk to Olmoti Crater and on to the rim of Empakai, then spend a day walking down to Empakai's soda lake and back. Two nights in the central Serengeti follow.
From the Serengeti you leave by the little-used north-eastern route through Klein's Gate and Loliondo, down to Lake Natron. A day there brings a Maasai visit, a swim at the waterfalls, the ancient footprints and the flamingos. The trip ends with a 1 am climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai, 2,878 m, and the drive back to your hotel in Arusha.
Fit, curious travellers who want more than game drives: walking, culture, remote country and a hard final climb. You camp throughout, with a cook and a driver guide who stays with you all the way.

what makes it special
day by day
Your guide meets you at your hotel in Arusha at 8:30 am and you drive to Tarangire National Park with a picnic lunch. On arrival you meet an armed ranger for a walking safari among giant baobabs, acacia woodland and tall termite mounds, where you may come across buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, baboons, giraffes and impalas. After lunch you continue by vehicle, looking for elephants, oryx and big cats. After an early dinner you head out again from 8 pm to 11 pm on a night game drive.
Overnight: Tarangire public campsite · Meals: Lunch & dinner
At 5:45 am you take a breakfast box and set out for a sunrise game drive, when predators are most active. You carry on through the park until the afternoon, then return to camp for a hot lunch. After lunch you head out again and keep exploring Tarangire's river valley and woodlands until late in the day, then drive on to your next campsite for dinner and the night.
Overnight: Migombani Campsite, Mto wa Mbu · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After an early breakfast you drive to Ngorongoro and descend 610 metres to the crater floor for about six hours of game viewing, with a picnic lunch. Look for endangered black rhino, lions, elephants, zebras, buffaloes and wildebeest, and for flamingos and other birds on the soda lake. All these grazers support lions and leopards, with hyenas and jackals close behind. In the late evening you drive across the highlands to Nainokanoka.
Overnight: Nainokanoka Maasai village camp · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you walk for an hour to Olmoti Crater, take in the view and walk back to the village, then drive to Bulati Maasai primary school for lunch. After lunch you walk about 9 km, four hours, to Empakai, with views of Kilimanjaro, Meru and Olmoti. Empakai is 300 metres deep, its floor half covered by a soda lake, and bushbuck, buffaloes and blue monkeys live on the rim.
Overnight: Empakai Crater rim campsite (about 3,100 m) · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you walk slowly, pole pole, down the steep path into Empakai Crater and around the lake, with lunch on the crater floor at the water's edge. Buffaloes, waterbuck, reedbuck, zebras, wildebeest and many birds can be seen at close range. In all this is about six hours of walking, down and back up, so take it slowly and drink plenty of water. After lunch you climb back to the rim and drive to the Ngorongoro rim for the night.
Overnight: Simba Campsite on the Ngorongoro Crater rim · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you set out on a full-day game drive with picnic lunches, crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and watching for wildlife on the way to the central Serengeti. As the highlands drop onto the open plains, you enter the land of the great migration, where more than a million wildebeest follow the rains each year. You arrive at your campsite in the central Serengeti in time for dinner.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
At 5:30 am you take a breakfast box and head out for a sunrise game drive, returning to camp at 8:30 am. Then, with a picnic lunch, you spend the whole day in the park. Your guide chooses the best areas for the time of year: the hippo pool, where hippos share the water with crocodiles, the lion prides, and, in season, the migration herds of wildebeest and zebras. Leopard and cheetah are harder to find, but always possible. You stay out for sunset.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you set out on a game drive with a picnic lunch, leaving the Serengeti by the north-east through Klein's Gate and crossing the Loliondo Game Controlled Area. Lunch is on the Salei plain, with views over the Maasai bushland around Lake Natron and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro. The road then drops into the Rift Valley, and you reach Lake Natron in the evening.
Overnight: Worldview Campsite, Lake Natron · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you visit a local Maasai community to learn about their way of life. At 11 am you drive to the foot of the escarpment and walk up to the waterfalls to swim and watch the birds. After lunch you visit the footprint heritage site at Engare Sero. Late in the afternoon you take a short walk by the lake, one of the main breeding areas of the flamingos, and return to camp after sunset.
Overnight: Worldview Campsite, Lake Natron · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
At 1 am you have a cup of coffee and drive to the start of the climb, where your English-speaking Maasai mountain guide leads you up to the summit, 2,878 m (9,442 ft). The climb is hard and steep, with scrambling on rock. From the top you look into the active crater and out to Ngorongoro, Longido, Lake Natron, Kitumbeine and Kerimasi. After sunrise you descend to the vehicle, return to camp for lunch, then drive back to your hotel in Arusha.

before you ask
You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.
Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.
Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.
Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. We can add or remove days, swap parks, or change the accommodation to suit your budget, and your specialist will send you a revised plan and quote.
Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.
Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.
It is the hardest part of the trip. The path is steep and loose, with sections where you use your hands on rock, and there is almost no shade once the sun is up, which is why the climb starts in the middle of the night. No mountaineering skills are needed, but you should be fit and comfortable on steep ground. Allow four to five hours up.
