Kilimanjaro & treks
Arusha, Ngorongoro Crater, Nainokanoka, Olmoti, Bulati, Empakai, Naiyobi, Acacia Camp, Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai
your journey
Unlike a safari that you watch through a vehicle window, this trip lets you cross the Ngorongoro highlands on foot. It combines a crater game drive, five days of walking between Maasai settlements and volcanic craters, and a climb of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai.
After the Ngorongoro Crater you spend the first night in the Maasai village of Nainokanoka. From there you walk past Olmoti Crater to Bulati, on to Empakai Crater, where you go down to the forest and lake on the floor, then across open highland to Naiyobi and Acacia Camp. Each day is about five to six hours on foot.
On the sixth day the highlands fall away to the Rift Valley and you continue by vehicle to Lake Natron. The climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai starts around midnight so that you reach the summit near sunrise, and you return to Arusha that afternoon.
Active travellers who want to walk for several days in a row, sleep at simple campsites and spend time with Maasai communities. No technical experience is needed, but you should be fit and comfortable on uneven ground for five to six hours a day.

what makes it special
day by day
We collect you in Arusha in the morning and drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You descend into the crater for a game drive and picnic lunch, looking for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and the many other animals that live on the crater floor. Afterwards you drive up into the highlands to the Maasai village of Nainokanoka, where you learn about the community and its way of life.
Overnight: Nainokanoka Maasai village · Meals: Lunch & dinner
After breakfast you start walking towards Olmoti Crater. The trail crosses highland grassland to the crater, where you stop to take in the views over the surrounding country. You then continue towards Bulati, passing Maasai settlements along the way. After about five hours on foot you reach Bulati campsite for dinner and the night.
Overnight: Bulati campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Today takes you deeper into the Ngorongoro highlands. You walk for about six hours towards Empakai Crater, with views over the Maasai plains and, weather permitting, to Ol Doinyo Lengai. When you reach Empakai you descend into the crater to explore the forest and the lake, where you may see wildlife and plenty of birds, before returning to the rim for the night.
Overnight: Empakai campsite on the crater rim · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you continue across the highlands towards Naiyobi. The trail passes through open country and traditional Maasai settlements, and your guide explains the local environment and customs as you go. Depending on conditions, you may see Thomson's gazelles, dik-dik and many kinds of birds. After about five hours on foot you arrive at Naiyobi campsite for dinner.
Overnight: Naiyobi campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
You start early and walk on through remote highland country towards Acacia Camp, about five hours away. As the day goes on the scenery changes: the green highlands slowly give way to the dry volcanic landscape around Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai. You arrive at camp in the afternoon with time to rest before dinner.
Overnight: Acacia campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you walk the last stretch towards the volcanic country around Ol Doinyo Lengai. At the end of the walking section you meet the vehicle and continue by road to Lake Natron. After lunch you explore the lake shore, where you may see flamingos and other birds, and, depending on conditions, visit the nearby waterfalls. Then it is an early night before the climb.
Overnight: Lake Natron campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
The last day starts around midnight with the climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the active volcano the Maasai hold sacred. You climb in the dark with your guide, aiming to reach the summit around sunrise, and look out over the volcanic landscape and the Maasai plains before starting down. Back at camp you have lunch, then drive back to Arusha, where the trek ends.
Overnight: Tour ends in Arusha in the evening · Meals: Breakfast & lunch

before you ask
Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.
We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.
Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.
On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.
You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.
It needs no mountaineering experience, but it is physically demanding. You walk five to six hours a day on uneven ground for five days, then climb Ol Doinyo Lengai, so you should be fit and prepare with some long walks before the trip.
Mostly at simple campsites along the route, plus the first night in the Maasai village of Nainokanoka. We confirm the exact camps and facilities with you before you book.
