Overview

This is a true walking trip across the Ngorongoro highlands, from the green crater country around Nainokanoka down to the hot, bare Rift Valley at Lake Natron, finishing with a night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai.

After a first day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, you walk each day with a Maasai warrior guide while donkeys carry the luggage and water, and a 4WD vehicle with your driver guide and cook supports the camps. You pass Olmoti Crater, sleep at Bulati Maasai school, walk down into Empakai Crater with its soda lake, and cross open highland past Maasai bomas to Acacia Camp.

From there the path skirts the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai to the Rift Valley floor. A full day at Lake Natron, with a swim at the Ngare Sero waterfalls and flamingos on the lake, gives you a rest before the climb, which starts at 1 am so that you are on the summit near sunrise.

Who it suits

Fit walkers who enjoy several days in a row on foot, simple camping and remote country. The climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai on the last day is steep and demanding; the rest of the trek is moderate.

The itinerary

We collect you from your hotel in Arusha at 7:30 am for the three-hour drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You descend to the crater floor for about six hours of game viewing with a picnic lunch. Ngorongoro is one of the great wonders of nature and home to black rhino, elephants, lions and many other animals. Afterwards you drive across the highlands to Nainokanoka Maasai village for the night.

Overnight: Nainokanoka Maasai villageMeals: Lunch & dinner

After breakfast you set off on foot with your Maasai guide and the donkeys. About an hour of walking brings you to Olmoti Crater, where you stop to look down into the caldera. You then continue for about three hours across the highlands to Bulati, where you camp at the Maasai school. Lunch is on the way, and there are Maasai homesteads and herds of cattle all along the route.

Overnight: Camp at Bulati Maasai schoolMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

You walk slowly, pole pole, for about five hours up and down through open country, with views over the Maasai plains and ahead to Ol Doinyo Lengai, reaching the rim of Empakai Crater in time for lunch. After lunch you take the very steep path down to the crater floor, where buffaloes, waterbuck, reedbuck and many birds can be seen close up as you walk around the lake. In the evening you climb back to the rim.

Overnight: Empakai campsite on the crater rimMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you walk for about five hours across the highlands, with wide views in every direction. Along the way you see small antelopes such as Thomson's gazelle and dik-dik and many kinds of birds, and you pass traditional Maasai bomas. Your guide explains local Maasai culture and daily life as you go, and you reach Acacia Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and the night.

Overnight: Acacia campsiteMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you follow winding paths across bare volcanic rock, rounding the north-western foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the active volcano the Maasai call the Mountain of God. After about two hours of walking you find the vehicle waiting at Mti Mmoja, and it drives you on to Worldview Campsite near Lake Natron for lunch and a restful afternoon after the days on foot.

Overnight: Worldview Campsite, Lake NatronMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you drive to the foot of the escarpment and walk up the river to the Ngare Sero waterfalls, where you can swim in the river pool and watch birds and butterflies. Lunch is at the falls. In the afternoon you walk back to the vehicle and drive to Lake Natron to look for lesser flamingos. The lake is their most important breeding site in East Africa, with up to two million birds in the breeding season.

Overnight: Worldview Campsite, Lake NatronMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

At 1 am you have a cup of coffee and drive to the start of the climb. With your guide you climb to the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai, 2,878 m (9,442 ft), in four to five hours. It is steep and loose, with some rock scrambling, and there is hardly any shade, which is why you go at night. From the top you look into the active crater and out to Ngorongoro, Longido, Lake Natron, Kitumbeine and Kerimasi. After sunrise you descend, return to camp for lunch and drive back to Arusha.

Common questions

Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.

We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.

Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.

On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.

You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.

It is the hardest part of the trip. The path is steep and loose, with sections where you use your hands on rock, and there is almost no shade once the sun is up, which is why the climb starts in the middle of the night. No mountaineering skills are needed, but you should be fit and comfortable on steep ground. Allow four to five hours up.

Both start with the Ngorongoro Crater and end with Ol Doinyo Lengai. This one walks from Empakai straight to Acacia Camp and then gives you a full rest day at Lake Natron and the waterfalls before the climb. The Naiyobi version spends one more day on foot in the highlands and has less time at the lake.
