your journey

Overview

This trip shows you a side of northern Tanzania that most safaris drive straight past. You leave Arusha for the Great Rift Valley and spend three nights around Lake Natron, a remote soda lake below the volcano the Maasai call Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Mountain of God.

You have time to settle in before the climb: a day for the lake, where lesser flamingos breed, and for a visit to a Maasai community. The climb itself starts around midnight so that you reach the top near sunrise, before the heat of the day. It is steep and demanding, and the rest of that day is for recovery.

On the way home you stop at Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive among its elephants, giraffes, hippos and birdlife, and spend the night nearby before the short drive back to Arusha.

Who it suits

Active travellers who want a volcano climb and time in the Rift Valley, with a taste of classic game viewing at the end. You need good fitness for the climb; the rest of the trip is gentle.

The itinerary

You leave Arusha in the morning and drive north into the Great Rift Valley. The road passes through changing country, with volcanic peaks, dry plains and the villages of rural Tanzania along the way. You arrive at Lake Natron and settle into your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the surrounding area or walk to a nearby waterfall before dinner.

Overnight: Lake Natron

After breakfast you explore the Lake Natron area and learn how this volcanic landscape works. The lake is highly alkaline and is the most important breeding area in East Africa for lesser flamingos. You then visit a local Maasai community to learn about traditional livelihoods, homes and livestock. In the late afternoon you prepare for the climb, with an early dinner and a few hours of rest before you set off.

Overnight: Lake Natron

You start around midnight with your mountain guide. The ascent is steep and physically demanding, and you climb through the dark early hours, aiming to reach the summit around sunrise. From the upper slopes there are views across the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron, weather permitting. After descending, you return to camp for breakfast or brunch and the rest of the day to recover.

Overnight: Lake Natron

After breakfast and a slow start, you leave Lake Natron and drive to Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive. Depending on the season, you may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, monkeys and many kinds of birds. Lake Manyara is also known for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never certain. After the drive you continue to your accommodation near the park.

Overnight: Accommodation near Lake Manyara

After breakfast you begin the drive back to Arusha. If your schedule and package allow, we can fit in a short morning game drive before you leave the Manyara area. You reach Arusha in the afternoon, where the tour ends. If you are flying out the same day, let us know your flight time so that we can plan the drive around it.

Common questions

Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.

We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.

Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.

On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.

You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.

It is the hardest part of the trip. The path is steep and loose, with sections where you use your hands on rock, and there is almost no shade once the sun is up, which is why the climb starts in the middle of the night. No mountaineering skills are needed, but you should be fit and comfortable on steep ground. Allow four to five hours up.

We run it either way. Tell us whether you want a private vehicle or are happy to join others when you enquire.
