Kilimanjaro & treks
Arusha, Tarangire, Longido, Kitumbeine, Gelai, Lake Natron, Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Kilimanjaro Airport
your journey
This budget camping trip gives you two very different weeks in one: first on foot through Maasai country with Maasai guides, then on safari through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
After a first day in Tarangire, you drive to Longido and walk for five days through the foothills of Mount Longido, the villages and ridges of Kitumbeine, the Ngarirat wetland and the rugged Rift Valley country around Gelai, meeting Maasai communities along the way. The walking ends at the Ngare Sero waterfalls and Lake Natron.
From Natron you enter the Serengeti from the north and spend three nights in the central Serengeti, with two full days of game drives. On the way back you visit Olduvai Gorge, spend a day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor and finish with a game drive in Lake Manyara before the drive to Kilimanjaro Airport.
Active travellers on a budget who want real walking and Maasai culture as well as the great parks. Several trekking days are long and rocky, so good fitness helps; the safari days are easy.

what makes it special
day by day
We collect you in Arusha in the morning and drive to Tarangire National Park with a picnic lunch for a day of game driving. Tarangire is known for its elephants and baobab trees, and depending on the season you may see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, lions and many birds. After the game drive you return to Arusha for dinner and the night.
Overnight: Mc Ellys Hotel, Arusha · Meals: Lunch & dinner
After breakfast you drive to Longido Maasai village and meet your Maasai walking guides. You walk through the foothills of Mount Longido, learning about local plants and their traditional uses, with views across northern Tanzania when the weather is clear. The walk takes about five to seven hours. In the evening you share Maasai food and storytelling with the local community.
Overnight: Longido Campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After an early breakfast you continue into the foothills of Mount Longido, climbing towards higher viewpoints where, on a clear day, you can see Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valley. After lunch you walk on towards Kitumbeine Maasai village through traditional Maasai country. The distance, about 10 to 20 km, depends on the route agreed for your group.
Overnight: Kitumbeine Campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Today you walk around Kitumbeine to a ridge viewpoint, over rocky, uneven ground that climbs steadily. After enjoying the view you come down part of the way and continue towards the Ngarirat area. Later in the day you explore the surroundings on foot, looking for wildlife and birds around the seasonal wetland, before returning to the village for the night.
Overnight: Kitumbeine Maasai village · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
You continue towards Gelai through the rugged country of the Rift Valley. With uphill sections and exposed ground, this is one of the harder walking days of the trip, so start early and carry plenty of water. Along the way you may see zebras, giraffes and gerenuk, and many kinds of birds. You reach Gelai Village Campsite for dinner and the night.
Overnight: Gelai Village Campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you head to the Ngare Sero area and walk up to the waterfalls, with time by the natural pools where conditions allow. After lunch you continue to Lake Natron, an important wetland known for its flamingos and its dramatic Rift Valley setting, before going on to your campsite for dinner. Tonight marks the end of the walking part of the trip.
Overnight: Worldview Campsite, Lake Natron · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you leave Lake Natron and drive to Serengeti National Park, entering through the north of the ecosystem. From the gate you game drive towards the central Serengeti, watching for elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, lions and other wildlife along the way. You reach your campsite in time for dinner.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
You start with an early game drive to see the Serengeti at sunrise, when the animals are most active, then return to camp for breakfast before a full day on the plains. Your guide chooses where to go according to wildlife movements, road conditions and the season. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, wildebeest, zebras and giraffes are all possible, with many birds besides. You return after an evening drive.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
A second full day in the Serengeti gives you time to explore different areas and to go back to anything you missed. You have a picnic or hot lunch during the day, depending on where the game is, and continue your game drive into the afternoon. In the evening you return to camp for dinner and your last night in the park.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
You start with an early game drive before returning to camp for breakfast, then drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, game viewing on the way. You stop at Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important sites in the story of human evolution. Then you continue up into the Ngorongoro highlands and arrive at the crater rim for the night.
Overnight: Simba Campsite on the Ngorongoro Crater rim · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After an early breakfast you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater holds a remarkable concentration of wildlife, and you may see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and, with luck, the endangered black rhino. You have a picnic lunch on the crater floor before climbing out and driving to your campsite.
Overnight: Twiga Campsite · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you drive to Lake Manyara National Park for your last game drive, through groundwater forest, open plains, wetlands and the lakeshore. Look for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, monkeys and birds, and for the tree-climbing lions, which are seen only now and then. After the game drive we drive you to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure.
Overnight: Tour ends at Kilimanjaro International Airport · Meals: Breakfast & lunch

before you ask
Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.
We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.
Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.
On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.
You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.
Both. The first half is trekking through Maasai country with Maasai guides and time in the villages; the second half is a camping safari in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.
Several days are long, over rocky and uneven ground, with some steep and exposed sections, especially on the way to Gelai. You need no climbing experience, but you should be fit and used to walking for several hours at a time.
