Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres (19,341 ft), which makes it the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It is a dormant volcano with three cones, Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. The summit, Uhuru Peak on the rim of Kibo, is named in honour of Tanzania's independence in 1961.

A climb takes you through five climate zones, each with a character of its own. You start in lush rainforest, walk up into moorland of giant heather and lobelias, cross the alpine desert and finish among the snow and ice of the summit. On the lower slopes you may see elephant, buffalo, colobus monkeys, bushbuck and many birds.

Kilimanjaro was declared a national park in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. We run climbs on the Marangu, Machame, Rongai, Umbwe, Shira, Lemosho and Northern Circuit routes, from five to eight days on the mountain, with experienced mountain guides and a full support team, and a climb can be combined with a safari.

Near the mountain, the Materuni waterfalls and coffee farms and the Chemka hot springs make easy day trips before or after your climb.
