Kilimanjaro Airport, Marangu Gate, Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, Kibo Hut, Uhuru Peak, Marangu Gate
your journey
Marangu is the oldest and best-known route up Kilimanjaro, and the only one where you sleep in huts rather than tents. It starts on the south-eastern side of the mountain, about an hour and a half by road from Moshi, and climbs through rainforest and moorland to the high desert of the Saddle before the summit push from Kibo Hut. The same path is used for the way down, so you pass familiar ground on the descent.
Solid roofs and bunk beds make Marangu a sensible choice in the wetter months, and the gradient is steady rather than steep. Its weakness is acclimatisation, because the route gains height quickly. That is why we build in a full extra day at Horombo Hut, with a walk higher up and back, before you move on to Kibo.
A five-day version without the Horombo rest day is possible, but we advise it only for climbers who are already used to altitude. Marangu is busy in July to September and December to March. We meet you at the airport and you spend a night at Weru Weru River Lodge before and after the climb.
Walkers who would rather sleep in a hut than a tent, and those climbing in the shoulder seasons when a solid roof matters. The path is steady rather than steep, but summit night is as hard as on any route, so you still need good fitness and a few days of multi-day hiking behind you.

what makes it special
day by day
A Honesha representative meets you in the arrivals hall at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and drives you to your hotel near Moshi, Weru Weru River Lodge. Check-in starts at 1 pm, so there is time to rest and unwind after the flight. In the evening your guide joins you for a briefing on the route, the daily routine and altitude, and checks your equipment so that anything missing can be sorted before you set off in the morning.
After breakfast your guide and crew collect you for the drive to Marangu Gate (1,860 m) on the south-eastern side of the mountain. Once permits are issued and you have signed in with the rescue service, the path climbs through rainforest, where showers are common, so pack a rain jacket and a dry layer. You reach Mandara Hut (2,700 m) in the afternoon, with time for a short walk to the rim of Maundi Crater if the sky is clear. From today, drink three to four litres of water, skip alcohol and tell your guide about any headache. About 11 km, 5 to 7 hours.

The forest thins to heather and open moorland dotted with giant groundsels, and the views widen with every hour. At Horombo Hut (3,720 m) you see both of Kilimanjaro's main peaks at once, the snow-capped dome of Kibo and the jagged towers of Mawenzi. After lunch and a rest, you walk about 2.5 km towards Kibo Hut, gaining some 200 metres, then come back down for dinner. About 10 km, 5 to 6 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
This extra day is the reason we recommend the six-day Marangu climb. After breakfast you walk higher up the trail towards Kibo, spending a few hours above 4,000 metres before returning to Horombo for lunch. The afternoon is yours to rest, photograph Mawenzi or simply sleep. It feels easy, but it gives your body the time it needs to adapt before the big climb ahead. About 5 to 8 km, 3 to 4 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
The trail climbs past the last water point and out onto the Saddle, a wide, stony desert between Kibo and Mawenzi where little grows. The walking is not steep, but keep a slow pace and save your strength. You reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m) in time for lunch. The rest of the day is for sleeping, drinking and eating, with an early dinner and a final briefing before a wake-up call around 11 pm. About 10 km, 4 to 8 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
You leave Kibo Hut around midnight and zigzag up steep scree by headtorch to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then follow the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), ideally around sunrise. The path is not technical, but the altitude tests everyone, and your guides watch each climber closely. After photographs you descend to Kibo Hut for a rest and a meal, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m). About 16 km, 9 to 12 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After a well-earned breakfast you walk down through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Take the descent steadily, because tired legs and loose ground cause most slips. At the gate you say goodbye to your crew and collect your summit certificate, a good moment to celebrate together. Then it is a short drive back to Weru Weru River Lodge for a hot shower and a proper bed. About 18 km, 5 to 6 hours.
Meals: Breakfast & lunch
Enjoy a slow breakfast and a rest before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Hotel check-out is at 11 am. If your flight leaves in the evening, ask us about a late check-out or an extra night at the lodge, which can be arranged for an additional fee. Many climbers add a safari, a day at Materuni Waterfall or a few days in Zanzibar after the mountain, and your specialist can plan the connection for you.

before you ask
Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.
We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.
Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.
On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.
You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.
Yes. The five-day climb leaves out the rest day at Horombo Hut and goes straight on to Kibo Hut. It suits climbers who have recently been above 4,000 metres without trouble. For most people the sixth day makes summit night noticeably easier, so it is the version we recommend.
Often, yes. The huts belong to the national park and the rangers allocate beds. We ask for our groups to be kept together, but in busy months you may share a hut with climbers from other companies. Bring earplugs and a good sleeping bag, as the huts are not heated.
