your journey

Overview

This is a safari you do largely on foot. After a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, you head north into the Crater Highlands, walk for three days with Maasai escorts and pack donkeys from Nainokanoka past Empakaai Crater and down into the Rift Valley, and finish at Lake Natron, with its flamingos, waterfalls and the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai rising above.

The walking is on paths through Maasai grazing land and villages rather than in a national park, so you see how people and wildlife share the highlands. Nights are spent camping: on the Ngorongoro rim, at Nainokanoka, on the rim of Empakaai, near Nayobi village and beside the river at Lake Natron.

The climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai on the last day is hard: a steep ascent on loose ash that starts at midnight. It is for fit walkers only. If it is not for you, tell your specialist and they will plan a quieter last morning.

Who it suits

Fit, adventurous travellers who enjoy multi-day hiking and simple camping, returning safari-goers who want more than game drives, and anyone interested in Maasai life in the highlands.

The itinerary

A Honesha representative meets you in the arrivals hall at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to Arusha, where you have dinner and spend the night at Moyoni Lodge. Your guide will go through the week with you: the vehicle days, the three days on foot with Maasai escorts and pack donkeys, and the night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai at the end. It is a good time to check your boots, water bottles and warm layers.

Overnight: Moyoni Lodge, ArushaMeals: Dinner

After breakfast you drive west through Karatu and up into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, then descend to the crater floor for a game drive. Lunch is a picnic at the hippo pool, and in the afternoon you look for black rhino, lion, buffalo and the flamingos on Lake Magadi. In the evening you climb back to the rim and camp at Simba Campsite, high on the crater edge, where the nights are cold.

Overnight: Simba Campsite, Ngorongoro Crater rim (camping)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you follow the rim road north with your guide to Nainokanoka village, about 50 kilometres from Simba Campsite. If you arrive in good time, you walk for 45 to 60 minutes up to Olmoti Crater, a smaller caldera with views over its grassy floor and the Munge River waterfall. The Munge rises here and flows down into the Ngorongoro Crater. Dinner and the night are at the Nainokanoka campsite.

Overnight: Nainokanoka campsite (camping)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Today the walking begins. With Maasai escorts and donkeys to carry the luggage, you walk for five to six hours through Maasai grazing land and small villages, while your guide explains local customs and life in the highlands. The route crosses the Embulbul Depression, where Maasai cattle graze alongside zebra and wildebeest, and the birdlife is rich. You camp for the night on the rim of Empakaai Crater, with its deep soda lake far below.

Overnight: Camp on the rim of Empakaai CraterMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Rise early for the sunrise over Empakaai's crater lake, often pink with flamingos. After breakfast and lunch at camp the donkeys are loaded again, and you walk about seven kilometres along the crater rim towards Nayobi village, four to five hours in all. There you refill water bottles and spend time with the local Maasai community before walking on to a campsite under the acacias for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Overnight: Bush camp near Nayobi villageMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

The last walking day is a descent of three to four hours from Nayobi to the floor of the Rift Valley. As you drop, the view opens across Lake Natron, the cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai and the plains towards the Serengeti. After lunch and a rest, 4x4 vehicles collect you for the drive to your campsite beside the river that feeds the lake, where you can cool off in the fresh water. Dinner and the night are at the riverside campsite.

Overnight: Riverside campsite at Lake NatronMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you head out to the shore of Lake Natron, a shallow soda lake that is the main breeding ground of the lesser flamingo in East Africa. Depending on the season, thousands of flamingos may be feeding in the shallows, along with many other water birds. You return to camp for lunch, then walk up the river gorge to the waterfalls for a swim in clear, fresh water and a quiet afternoon. Dinner and the night are at the campsite.

Overnight: Riverside campsite at Lake NatronMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

At around midnight you start the climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai Mountain of God and the only active volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. The path is steep and loose, and it takes six to seven hours to reach the summit at about 2,960 metres. On a clear morning you see Lake Natron, the Serengeti plains and sometimes Kilimanjaro and Meru while you eat a packed breakfast. The descent takes three to four hours, then after lunch you drive to Arusha and on to the airport.

Common questions

You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.

Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.

Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.

Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. We can add or remove days, swap parks, or change the accommodation to suit your budget, and your specialist will send you a revised plan and quote.

Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.

Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.

The highland walks last up to six hours a day on rough paths above 2,000 metres, with pack donkeys carrying your luggage. The Ol Doinyo Lengai climb is much harder: steep, loose ash and rock, climbed in the dark. You should be a regular hiker who is comfortable with long days and simple camping.
