Safari
Arusha, Tarangire, central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Olmoti Crater, Empakai Crater, Arusha
your journey
This private camping safari follows the classic northern circuit and then keeps going where most safaris turn back, into the quiet highlands of Olmoti and Empakai craters.
You start in Tarangire with something few parks allow: a walking safari with an armed ranger, and a night game drive after dinner. A second day in Tarangire is followed by the drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to two nights in the central Serengeti, then a morning on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.
The last two days are on foot. You walk around Olmoti Crater and its waterfall, then about 9 km over the highlands to camp on the rim of Empakai at about 3,100 metres. On the final morning you walk down to Empakai's soda lake and back before the drive to Arusha. You camp at public campsites throughout, with a cook, a pop-up roof vehicle and a driver guide who stays with you all week.
Travellers on a budget who want the big parks and some walking too. The two walking days are moderate, but the Empakai descent and climb back out are steep, so you should be reasonably fit.

what makes it special
day by day
Your guide meets you at your hotel in Arusha at 8:30 am and you drive to Tarangire National Park with a picnic lunch. On arrival you meet an armed ranger for a walking safari among giant baobabs, acacia woodland and tall termite mounds, where you may come across buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, baboons, giraffes and impalas. After lunch you continue by vehicle, looking for elephants, oryx and big cats. After an early dinner you head out again from 8 pm to 11 pm on a night game drive.
Overnight: Tarangire public campsite · Meals: Lunch & dinner
At 5:45 am you take a breakfast box and set out for a sunrise game drive, when predators are most active. You carry on through the park until the afternoon, then return to camp for a hot lunch. After lunch you head out again and keep exploring Tarangire's river valley and woodlands until late in the day, then drive on to your next campsite for dinner and the night.
Overnight: Migombani Campsite, Mto wa Mbu · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you set out on a full-day game drive with picnic lunches, crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and watching for wildlife on the way to the central Serengeti. As the highlands drop onto the open plains, you enter the land of the great migration, where more than a million wildebeest follow the rains each year. You arrive at your campsite in the central Serengeti in time for dinner.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
At 5:30 am you take a breakfast box and head out for a sunrise game drive, returning to camp at 8:30 am. Then, with a picnic lunch, you spend the whole day in the park. Your guide chooses the best areas for the time of year: the hippo pool, where hippos share the water with crocodiles, the lion prides, and, in season, the migration herds of wildebeest and zebras. Leopard and cheetah are harder to find, but always possible.
Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central Serengeti · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After an early breakfast you drive to Ngorongoro and descend 610 metres to the crater floor for about six hours of game viewing, with lunch in the crater. Look for endangered black rhino, lions, elephants, zebras, buffaloes and wildebeest, and for flamingos and other birds on the soda lake. All these grazers support lions and leopards, with hyenas and jackals close behind. In the late evening you drive up to the rim for the night.
Overnight: Simba Campsite on the Ngorongoro Crater rim · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you drive to Olmoti Crater for an hour's walk around the crater and a visit to the waterfall, then have lunch near Bulati Maasai primary school. After lunch you walk about 9 km, four hours, to Empakai, with views of Kilimanjaro, Meru and Olmoti. Empakai is 300 metres deep, its floor half covered by a soda lake, and bushbuck, buffaloes and blue monkeys live on the rim. On a clear day you can see Ol Doinyo Lengai and Lake Natron.
Overnight: Empakai Crater rim campsite (about 3,100 m) · Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you walk slowly, pole pole, down the steep path into Empakai Crater and around the lake, with lunch on the crater floor at the water's edge. Buffaloes, waterbuck, reedbuck, zebras, wildebeest and many birds can be seen at close range. In all this is about six hours of walking, down and back up, so take it slowly and drink plenty of water. After lunch you climb back to the rim and meet the vehicle for the drive back to Arusha.

before you ask
You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.
Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.
Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.
Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. We can add or remove days, swap parks, or change the accommodation to suit your budget, and your specialist will send you a revised plan and quote.
Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.
Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.
You walk with an armed ranger in Tarangire on Day 1, for about an hour at Olmoti and about four hours (9 km) to Empakai on Day 6, and about six hours down into Empakai Crater and back on Day 7. The rest of the trip is by vehicle.
