your journey
Mount Meru, at 4,562 metres, is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and the centrepiece of Arusha National Park. It is a steep, dramatic volcano with a horseshoe-shaped crater, and the climb begins like a walking safari: giraffe, buffalo, zebra and colobus monkeys are often seen near the trail, and an armed park ranger walks with every group.
Four days on the mountain gives you a night at Miriakamba Hut, a night at Saddle Hut with the option of climbing Little Meru, and a gentler descent after the summit, with a second night at Miriakamba. The summit ridge is narrow and exposed in places, with the crater's inner cliffs on one side, and at sunrise Kilimanjaro floats above the clouds to the east.
Meru is a fine climb in its own right and an ideal warm-up for Kilimanjaro. A three-day version is possible if you are short of time. We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and you spend a night in a hotel before and after the climb.
Fit walkers who want a shorter mountain with real drama, and Kilimanjaro climbers looking to acclimatise first. The summit ridge has a few easy but unprotected scrambling sections, so you need sure feet and a reasonable head for heights. Sleeping is in park huts with bunks.

what makes it special
day by day
A Honesha representative meets you in the arrivals hall at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and drives you to your hotel in Arusha. Check-in starts at 1 pm, so there is time to rest after your flight. In the evening your guide joins you for a briefing on the climb, the huts and the summit night, and checks your equipment so that anything missing can be sorted before you leave in the morning.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha, confirmed by your specialist at booking
After breakfast you drive into Arusha National Park to Momella Gate (about 1,500 m), where your guide completes the permits and the porters pack the loads. An armed park ranger joins your group for the whole climb. The first hours feel like a walking safari, with giraffe, zebra, buffalo and warthog often near the path, and you pass a waterfall at the foot of the mountain before reaching Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m). About 10 km, 4 to 6 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
A steeper day as the forest gives way to giant heather and moorland along the ridge. The views open up across the crater to the Ash Cone and back over the park. You reach Saddle Hut (3,570 m) in time for lunch. In the afternoon, if you feel strong, your guide takes you up Little Meru (3,820 m) to help you acclimatise. Dinner is early so you can sleep before the midnight start. About 5 to 8 km, 3 to 5 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
You set off around midnight. A steep hour brings you to Rhino Point (3,800 m), then the path follows a ridge of ash and rock to Cobra Point and on to Socialist Peak (4,562 m), with the crater cliffs dropping away beside you. With luck you watch the sun rise behind Kilimanjaro. Take care on the unprotected sections, and follow your guide closely. You return to Saddle Hut for brunch and continue down to Miriakamba Hut. About 19 km, 8 to 12 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast you take the shorter northern path down through the forest to Momella Gate, a walk of two to four hours. Keep an eye out for elephant, buffalo, giraffe and black-and-white colobus monkeys on the way. At the gate you say goodbye to your crew and ranger and receive your certificate, then your driver takes you back to Arusha for a hot shower, a good meal and a proper bed. About 7 km, 2 to 4 hours.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha, confirmed by your specialist at booking · Meals: Breakfast & lunch
Enjoy a slow breakfast before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Hotel check-out is at 11 am, and a late check-out or an extra night can be arranged for an additional fee if your flight leaves in the evening. Many guests go straight on to Kilimanjaro after Meru, or add a safari or a few days in Zanzibar, and your specialist can plan the connection for you.

before you ask
Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.
We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.
Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.
On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.
You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.
Yes. On the three-day climb you sleep at Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut, then on summit day you go up to Socialist Peak and all the way down to Momella Gate, a long day of 12 to 14 hours. The four-day climb splits that descent with a second night at Miriakamba, which is kinder on your legs and gives you more time on the mountain.
Mount Meru lies inside Arusha National Park, where buffalo and elephant live in the forest. The park requires every climbing group to walk with an armed ranger. They know the animals well and are there as a precaution.
We do not advise climbing in April and May, the long rains, when the rock is slippery and the ridge is often in cloud. In heavy rain, ice or thick fog the ranger can call off the summit attempt for safety.
