Kilimanjaro & treks
Arusha, Maasai village, Lake Natron, Munge Waterfalls, Ol Doinyo Lengai, Arusha
your journey
This short trip packs three very different sides of northern Tanzania into three days. You begin on foot from your hotel in Arusha, walking out to a Maasai village and its farms, where you share lunch with the family and visit a local Maasai market.
On the second day you drive down into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Natron, a remote soda lake where lesser flamingos gather in their thousands. In the afternoon you walk to Munge Waterfalls and spend the evening with the local community before an early night at camp.
The climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai starts at about 1 am. The Maasai call it the Mountain of God, and it is the only active volcano in the world that erupts carbonatite lava. The path is steep and loose, and you aim to stand on the summit, 2,878 m (9,442 ft), as the sun comes up over the Rift Valley. After the descent and lunch at camp, we drive you back to Arusha.
Fit, adventurous travellers who want culture, remote landscapes and a hard night climb rather than a game-drive safari. You should be comfortable on steep, loose ground in the dark; no climbing experience is needed.

At 9:30 am your guide meets you at your hotel in Arusha and you set off on foot to a nearby Maasai village and the farms around it. You learn about everyday Maasai life, from livestock and traditional homes to the work of the farms, and have lunch in the village. Afterwards you visit a local Maasai market, where you can see traditional crafts and handmade goods, before returning to Arusha for the night.

After breakfast you leave at 9 am and drive north into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Natron, one of the most remote corners of the country. Lunch is at Worldview Campsite. In the evening you meet the local community before dinner and an early night.

At 1 am you have a cup of coffee and meet your English-speaking Maasai mountain guide, then drive to the start of the climb. Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.
We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.
Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.
On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.
You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.
It is the hardest part of the trip. The path is steep and loose, with sections where you use your hands on rock, and there is almost no shade once the sun is up, which is why the climb starts in the middle of the night. No mountaineering skills are needed, but you should be fit and comfortable on steep ground. Allow four to five hours up.
Yes. The lake, the waterfalls and the Maasai visits can be done without the climb. Tell us when you enquire and we will plan the last day around the lake instead.
