Kilimanjaro & treks
Arusha, Lake Natron, Ngare Sero waterfall, Ol Doinyo Lengai crater rim, Arusha
your journey
Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Mountain of God in the Maa language, is a steep, near-perfect volcanic cone rising above Lake Natron in northern Tanzania. It is sacred to the Maasai and it is still active. It is also the only volcano on earth known to erupt natrocarbonatite lava, which flows almost like water and runs black before cooling to white. It has erupted many times in the past century.
The climb starts around 1 am to avoid the fierce heat, and goes straight up loose ash and rock to the crater rim at about 2,960 metres, where you watch the sun rise over the Rift Valley and Lake Natron. It is short in distance but very steep, and the descent is as tiring as the ascent.
The day before the climb you drive from Arusha to Lake Natron, walk up a gorge to the Ngare Sero waterfall and visit the lakeshore. We can also add arrival and departure nights in Arusha, or combine Lengai with a safari.
Very fit, sure-footed hikers who want a raw, unusual challenge and do not mind a sleepless night. The climb is not technical, but it is steep, hot after sunrise and hard on the knees coming down. It is not suitable for people with a fear of heights or weak joints.

what makes it special
day by day
Your driver collects you from your hotel in Arusha in the morning for the long drive north to Lake Natron. The road passes through Maasai country, and there is a good chance of seeing herders, villages and some wildlife on the way. After checking in, a local guide walks you up a narrow gorge to the Ngare Sero waterfall, wading the stream in places, so wear sandals. Later you drive to the lakeshore, then return for an early dinner.
Overnight: Lengai Safari Lodge at Lake Natron, or similar · Meals: Dinner
At about 1 am your driver takes you to the foot of the volcano. You climb by headtorch on steep, loose ground, stopping often to rest, and stay close behind your guide. Breakfast is eaten on the way up. At the crater rim, about 2,960 m, you can sometimes hear the lava moving below. The descent is where most slips happen, so go carefully, and swap your fleece for a sun hat after dawn. The whole climb takes 7 to 12 hours, then you drive back to Arusha.
Overnight: Return to Arusha, no overnight included · Meals: Breakfast & lunch

Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.
We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.
Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.
On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.
You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.
It is one of the steepest walks in East Africa. There is no path in the usual sense, just loose ash and rock at a steep angle, and the descent is hard on the knees. You need good fitness, sturdy boots, a headtorch, gloves and at least three litres of water. Trekking poles help a lot on the way down.
Yes. We also run a four-day version with an arrival night in Arusha, two nights at Lake Natron and the drive back to the airport, and Lengai combines well with a Serengeti safari. Your specialist can plan it with you.
