If you are already on Zanzibar, the southern wilderness is closer than you might think. A light aircraft takes you from the island to Nyerere National Park (formerly part of the Selous), Tanzania's largest national park, where the Rufiji River winds through palm-lined lakes, channels and open woodland.
In two nights you get a taste of everything the park does well: game drives at the best hours of the day, a guided walk with an armed ranger and a boat safari among hippos, crocodiles and fishing birds. The park sees far fewer vehicles than the northern circuit, so sightings often feel like your own.
On the third morning you fly back to Zanzibar, in time for an afternoon on the beach.

what makes it special
day by day
A driver takes you from your hotel to Zanzibar's airport for the flight to Nyerere National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and stays with you for the whole safari. After a short introduction you set off on your first game drive through the woodland and open grassland, looking for elephant, lion, giraffe, hippo and a great variety of birds. In the evening you settle into your lodge or camp.
You rise with the sun for an early game drive, when the animals are at their busiest. Your guide explains what you are seeing as you go, from the tracks on the sand to the calls in the trees. After breakfast at camp you choose between a walking safari with an armed ranger and a boat safari along the Rufiji River. Lunch is followed by a quiet afternoon, then a late game drive before dinner at camp.
Enjoy a last breakfast in the bush, with the river birds calling around camp, before your guide drives you to the airstrip. The light aircraft takes you back to Zanzibar, where a driver meets you and takes you to your hotel. You are back in time for an afternoon on the beach, with plenty of stories from the wilderness to share over dinner.

You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.
Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.
Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.
Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. We can add or remove days, swap parks, or change the accommodation to suit your budget, and your specialist will send you a revised plan and quote.
Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.
Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.
The standard plan includes one of the two on Day 2. If you would like both, tell your specialist when you book; it depends on your camp and may cost extra.
