Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania's best-known safari destinations and the core of the wider Serengeti ecosystem in the north of the country. It lies west of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and runs up to the Kenyan border. Wide grassland mixes with woodland, rivers and rocky kopjes, and together they support a huge variety of wildlife.

The park is famous for its great numbers of wildebeest and other grazers, and for the predators that follow them. Lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena live across the ecosystem, while elephant, giraffe, buffalo and many kinds of antelope add to the mix. A quiet morning drive can change in minutes: a pride resting in the grass, elephants crossing the plains or thousands of wildebeest on the move.

Each year huge herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move through the ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. They follow the rain, so where they are changes through the year, and the predators stay close behind. If you hope to see a particular stage of the migration, such as a river crossing, tell us early so we can plan the timing and the area.

Most of our guests reach the Serengeti by road from Arusha, by way of Tarangire, Lake Manyara or the Ngorongoro Crater, and domestic flights to the park's airstrips save time on a shorter trip. Three to four days lets you see the Serengeti without rushing. A hot-air balloon flight over the plains can be added, depending on the area, season and itinerary.
