Overview

The Northern Circuit is one of Kilimanjaro's longest and most scenic routes. It starts in the west at Lemosho Gate, crosses the Shira Plateau to Lava Tower and Moir Hut, then swings around the quiet northern slopes of Kibo, past Buffalo Camp and Rongai Third Cave, to School Hut on the Saddle.

Eight days on the mountain make for a gradual ascent, with a climb-high, sleep-low day at Lava Tower and long stretches of trail that see little traffic. Summit night leaves School Hut around midnight for Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), and you descend to Millennium Camp and out through the forest at Mweka Gate.

The trip runs ten days in all. We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and you spend a night at a hotel in Arusha before and after the climb. On the mountain you sleep in tents, with a mess tent, and our guides carry oxygen, a pulse oximeter and a first-aid kit.

Who it suits

Walkers who want a long, gradual climb with more time to acclimatise and fewer people on the trail. No technical experience is needed, but you must be comfortable walking several hours a day, and summit day can take 14 to 16 hours.

The itinerary

An AAA Express Adventure representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to your hotel in Arusha. Later your mountain guide joins you for a briefing on the route, the daily routine and the effects of altitude, and checks that your gear is ready for the next morning's start. Dinner is at the hotel, followed by an early night before the drive to the mountain.

Overnight: Tulia Retreat Hotel & Spa, ArushaMeals: Dinner

After breakfast you drive from Arusha to Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro National Park. Once registration and the permit formalities are done, you start walking through the rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, and your guide will point out the mountain's plants and wildlife as you begin to gain height. You camp at Mti Mkubwa for the night. From 2,389 m to 2,785 m.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,785 m)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

You walk through the last of the rainforest and into the low alpine zone, where the country opens out and the trail climbs steadily towards the Shira Plateau. It is a relatively gradual day, a good chance to find your rhythm, drink well and enjoy the widening views. You reach Shira Camp 1 for dinner and the night. Camp at 3,504 m, about 7.9 km, 5–6 hours.

Overnight: Shira Camp 1 (3,504 m)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Today you head east across the Shira Plateau towards Lava Tower, passing through the high-altitude landscape around the Garden of the Senecios. After reaching Lava Tower, at about 4,600 m the highest point so far, the trail descends to Moir Hut to camp. Climbing higher during the day and sleeping lower is one of the most important principles of acclimatisation. Moir Hut about 4,161 m, about 9.8 km, 5–7 hours.

Overnight: Moir Hut camp (about 4,161 m)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

You climb out of the Moir Valley and continue around the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. Depending on conditions and the itinerary, you may take a short detour towards Little Lent Hill before rejoining the Northern Circuit. The trail then contours on to Buffalo Camp, where the views stretch north across the plains of northern Tanzania and into Kenya. Buffalo Camp about 4,033 m, about 9.2 km, 5–7 hours.

Overnight: Buffalo Camp (about 4,033 m)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

You continue across the northern slopes, climbing over Buffalo Ridge before descending towards Pofu Camp for lunch. In the afternoon the trail heads east to Rongai Third Cave. This is a shorter day, which gives you more time to rest and prepare for the higher stages of the climb. The northern side is quiet, and you may have long stretches of trail to yourselves. Third Cave about 3,936 m, about 6.8 km, 5–7 hours.

Overnight: Rongai Third Cave (about 3,936 m)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Today's walk climbs steadily towards the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. The ground becomes stony high alpine desert, and the air is thin, so take it slowly. You arrive at School Hut in the afternoon, eat an early dinner and get your equipment ready for the midnight summit attempt. Try to sleep a few hours before the wake-up call. School Hut about 4,700–4,800 m, about 4.8 km, 4–5 hours.

Overnight: School Hut camp (about 4,700–4,800 m)Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Around midnight, after a light snack and a hot drink, you begin the steep climb up Kibo in the dark. You reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point on Kilimanjaro. After photographs at the top you start the long descent to Millennium Camp for your last night on the mountain. About 1,178 m of ascent and more than 2,000 m of descent, around 14–16 hours in total.

Overnight: Millennium CampMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you walk the final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. At the gate your guide completes the park procedures and you receive your summit certificate before meeting our vehicle for the drive back to Arusha. After checking into your hotel, there is time for a hot shower, a rest and a celebration of your climb. About 12 km, 3–4 hours.

Overnight: Hotel in ArushaMeals: Breakfast & lunch

Enjoy a slow breakfast at the hotel before we drive you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. If you have time before your flight, ask us about adding a few days of safari in the northern parks or a day trip near Arusha; we can plan the connection for you. Your Northern Circuit trip ends at the airport.

Common questions

Kilimanjaro needs no ropes or technical climbing skills, but it is a serious high-altitude trek. You walk for several hours a day on uneven ground, nights are cold, and summit night starts around midnight in thin air. Walking regularly on hills before you come, with a loaded daypack, is the best preparation.

We choose routes and itineraries with enough days on the mountain, and we follow the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. On the Machame route, for example, you take short walks above camp at Shira, Lava Tower, Karanga and Barafu before returning to sleep lower. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water and tell your guide straight away about any headache, nausea or dizziness.

Many climbers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help with acclimatisation, but it is a prescription medicine and not right for everyone. Talk to your own doctor before the trip, especially about allergies and side effects, and tell your guide if you are taking it.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but the driest months are mid-January to mid-March and late June to October, which are also the busiest. The long rains from late March to early June bring wet trails and cloud, and we generally advise against climbing then unless you are experienced in those conditions. November brings short rains, often in the afternoon.

On our Kilimanjaro packages with hotel nights, you stay at our partner hotel, Weru Weru River Lodge near Moshi, or a similar hotel, on the night before and the night after the climb. Your guide holds the pre-climb briefing and gear check there.

You need good broken-in hiking boots, warm layers including a down jacket, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, a headtorch and a daypack. Tents, mats and all group and cooking equipment are provided. Your specialist will confirm what can be rented locally, including sleeping bags, and send you a full packing list.

Eight days on the mountain. With the arrival day and the departure day, the whole trip on this page takes ten days.

Around 14 to 16 hours of walking, depending on pace and conditions: about 1,178 m up from School Hut to Uhuru Peak, then more than 2,000 m down to Millennium Camp.
