Overview

This camping safari puts two days of walking in the middle of the northern circuit. You see the famous parks from the vehicle, and the Ngorongoro highlands on foot.

The trip starts in Tarangire, then an early visit to a Maasai boma before a game drive on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. From Simba Campsite you set off along the northern crater rim with a Maasai warrior guide, an armed ranger and donkeys, walking about 17 km a day through acacia forest to Leyanai and Ilkiepusi.

Back in the vehicle, you drive on to the Serengeti by way of the museum at Olduvai Gorge and spend two nights in the central Serengeti. On the way home you cross the conservation area to Mto wa Mbu and spend the last day in Lake Manyara National Park before returning to Arusha.

Who it suits

Budget travellers who want a full safari with some real walking in it. The two trekking days are long but not technical; the rest of the trip is by vehicle.

The itinerary

Your driver guide meets you at your hotel in Arusha at 8:30 am and you drive with a picnic lunch to Tarangire National Park for a full day of game driving. The park covers about 2,600 square kilometres, and in the dry season its wildlife concentrations rival the Serengeti's, with elephants, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, giraffes, oryx and predators such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. Birds include green wood hoopoes, Fischer's lovebirds and giant kingfishers.

Overnight: Tarangire public campsiteMeals: Lunch & dinner

At 6 am you have a cup of coffee and drive to a Maasai boma, where, depending on the season, you watch the livestock head out in the early morning and meet the elders, young warriors, women and children, who explain family ranks, traditions and beliefs. You are back at camp at 8 am for breakfast, then drive to Ngorongoro and descend 610 metres for six hours on the crater floor with a picnic lunch, looking for black rhino, lions and elephants.

Overnight: Simba Campsite on the Ngorongoro Crater rimMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you drive about a kilometre from Simba Campsite, with picnic lunches packed, to the start of the walk on the northern rim. You set off on foot through acacia forest with a Maasai warrior guide, armed rangers and donkeys to carry the luggage, with views down into the crater. The day covers about 17 km, and you may see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, bushbuck and many birds along the way.

Overnight: Leyanai campsite on the crater rimMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Another early start with picnic lunches for about 17 km on foot along the northern crater rim from Leyanai to Ilkiepusi, with your Maasai guide, the donkeys and an armed ranger. It takes five to six hours to cross the acacia forest, with views of the crater from the top of the rim. Buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, elephants, giraffes and many birds all live in this forest, so keep your camera ready.

Overnight: Ilkiepusi camp on the crater rimMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you walk about half a kilometre to meet the vehicle, then spend the whole day on a game drive to the Serengeti plains with a picnic lunch. On the way you stop at the small but fascinating museum at Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys made their famous finds of early human ancestors. Watch for lions, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes and buffaloes as you cross the plains, and drive to camp after sunset.

Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central SerengetiMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

At 5:30 am you have a cup of coffee and head out for a sunrise game drive, returning to camp for breakfast at 8 am. Then, with a picnic lunch, you spend the whole day on the Serengeti plains, home to a huge variety of animals and birds. Your guide searches the trees and kopjes for leopard and cheetah, and, in season, finds the wildebeest migration. You stay out for a sunset drive before returning to camp.

Overnight: Pimbi public campsite, central SerengetiMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you set out on a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch, leaving the Serengeti and crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where there is more wildlife to see along the way. In the afternoon you come down to Mto wa Mbu, a small, lively town below the Rift Valley escarpment where you can stop at the supermarket for anything you need. Dinner and the night are at your campsite in town.

Overnight: Migombani Campsite, Mto wa MbuMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you spend the day in Lake Manyara National Park with a picnic lunch. The park packs giant fig trees, mahogany and acacia woodland, grassy flood plains, the soda lake and the Rift Valley wall into a small area. Look for elephants, hippos, impalas, giraffes, warthogs, blue monkeys and buffaloes, and for the tree-climbing lions. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here. In the late evening you drive back to Arusha.

Common questions

You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.

Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.

Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.

Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. We can add or remove days, swap parks, or change the accommodation to suit your budget, and your specialist will send you a revised plan and quote.

Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.

Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.

About 17 km each, which takes five to seven hours with stops. The path runs through forest on the crater rim at over 2,000 metres. It is not steep mountain walking, but you should be used to spending a full day on your feet.
