Our honeymoon safari is built for two: a private vehicle and guide, a flexible day plan, and nights in lodges chosen for their setting. It follows the classic route of northern Tanzania, with enough time in each place to slow down.
You begin at Lake Manyara under the Rift Valley escarpment, then cross the Ngorongoro highlands to the central Serengeti around the Seronera River for two nights at a lodge inside the park. On the way back you stop at Olduvai Gorge, check in on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and take a two-hour walk through acacia forest along the rim with an armed ranger. Next morning you spend six hours on the crater floor, and the last day is a full game drive in Tarangire.
Three nights are at Serena lodges in the Serengeti and on the crater rim, and two at Farm of Dreams Lodge near Karatu.

what makes it special
day by day
Your driver-guide meets you at your hotel in Arusha at 8:30 am and drives you to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day of game driving with a picnic lunch. The park lies at the foot of the western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, and its varied habitat holds large numbers of elephants, the famous tree-climbing lions and flocks of flamingos drawn by the algae in the lake. In the evening you drive up to your lodge for dinner.
After an early breakfast you set off with a picnic lunch through the high, green Ngorongoro Conservation Area, then leave the highlands behind and descend onto the endless plains of the Serengeti. You head for the Seronera area in the centre of the park, one of its richest wildlife habitats, where the Seronera River gives water through the year and draws most of the Serengeti's species. You game drive until sunset, then go to your lodge.
At 5:30 am you take a breakfast box and go out for a sunrise game drive until about 9:30 am, then return to the lodge to collect a picnic lunch for a full day in the park. Your guide chooses the best areas for the season: a hippo pool where hippos share the water with crocodiles, a pride of lions, or the migration herds of wildebeest and zebra. Look too for elephant, giraffe, leopard, cheetah and many birds.
After breakfast you game drive out of the Serengeti with a picnic lunch, stopping at Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leakey found the skulls known as Nutcracker Man and Handy Man. You reach your crater-rim lodge at about 3:30 pm, leave your bags, and drive half an hour to the start of a two-hour walk with an armed ranger through acacia forest along the rim, with views into the crater and a chance of elephant, buffalo, bushbuck and monkeys.
Breakfast is at 6:00 am, then you take your picnic lunch and descend more than 600 metres to the crater floor for about six hours of game viewing. Herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland and elephant share the crater with lion, hyena, jackal, cheetah and the harder-to-find leopard. You visit Lake Magadi, the shallow soda lake in the south-west of the crater, for flamingos, hippos and water birds. In the evening you drive to your lodge near Karatu.
After an early breakfast you drive to Tarangire National Park for a full day of game driving with a picnic lunch. The park follows the Tarangire River through low hills of acacia woodland and giant baobabs, with large swamps in the south, and in the dry season the river and swamps draw animals from far around. Tarangire has some of the largest elephant herds in Africa, as well as fringe-eared oryx and the ashy starling. You reach Arusha in the late evening.

before you ask
You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.
Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.
Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.
Yes. Every itinerary on this site is a starting point. We can add or remove days, swap parks, or change the accommodation to suit your budget, and your specialist will send you a revised plan and quote.
Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.
Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.
Yes. The vehicle and your driver-guide are yours alone for all six days, and the day plan can be adjusted to suit you.
Tips are not included and are always your choice. As a guide, many travellers give their driver-guide about US$20–25 a day per group. Most lodges also have a staff tip box at reception for the rest of the team.
Prices are per person in US dollars, for 2, 4 or 6 travellers sharing the vehicle and rooms or tents, with a lower rate in the low season. The more of you travel together, the less each person pays. Travelling alone or in a bigger group? Ask us for a quote.
