Two nights in the Serengeti make this safari. After a first afternoon in Lake Manyara you cross the Ngorongoro highlands to Serengeti Heritage Luxury Camp, a tented camp in the park, and have a whole day to explore the plains, river valleys and kopjes without rushing on.
On the way back you game-drive out towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and spend the night near Karatu, ready for an early descent into the crater on the last morning. You sleep at Octagon Lodge on the first night and Endoro Lodge on the fourth.

what makes it special
day by day
You leave Arusha in the morning and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Inside the park your game drive passes through woodland and open areas to the shores of the lake. Look out for elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, baboons and a wide variety of birds. Lake Manyara is also known for its tree-climbing lions, though they are not always in the trees. After the game drive you continue to your lodge for dinner and the night.
After breakfast you leave the Lake Manyara area and travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Serengeti National Park. As you approach the Serengeti the game drive begins, and depending on the season you may see wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, elephant, lion and cheetah. You stop for a picnic lunch on the way and carry on with an afternoon game drive as you make your way to camp, arriving in the evening for dinner.
You start with an early game drive, when the animals are often most active, and return to camp for breakfast. Then you head out again with a picnic lunch for a full day of exploring the plains, river valleys and kopjes, looking for lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Your guide adjusts the route to the wildlife movements, the state of the roads and the season. Dinner and the night are back at camp.
After breakfast you leave the Serengeti with a picnic lunch and game-drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route gives you another chance to see wildlife as the landscape changes from open plains to the highlands, and you may meet lion, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe or elephant along the way. In the afternoon you continue to the Ngorongoro and Karatu area for dinner and the night at your lodge.
After an early breakfast you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater floor supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife, and you may see wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, hippo, elephant, lion, hyena and much more. You may also visit the Lake Magadi area, where flamingos and other water birds are sometimes seen. After the game drive you climb out of the crater and drive back to Arusha, arriving later in the day.

before you ask
You can go on safari here all year. The dry season from June to October is the easiest time for game viewing, because animals gather near rivers and the grass is short, but it is also the busiest. From November to May the parks are green, quieter and excellent for birds, with short rains around November and the long rains in April and May. Where the wildebeest migration is depends on the month, so tell us your dates and we will plan the route around them.
Our safaris use 4x4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof, so you can stand up for game viewing and photography. On a private safari the vehicle and driver-guide are yours alone for the whole trip.
Each tour page lists exactly what is included and excluded. On our northern circuit safaris, such as the 7-day Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire trip, national park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance fees are included. If you are not sure, ask your specialist before you book.

Bring light, neutral-coloured clothes, a warm layer for early mornings and for the Ngorongoro Crater rim, which is cold at night, comfortable shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries and memory cards make a big difference. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles more easily than hard suitcases.
Most visitors need a visa. Apply online in good time through the official Tanzania Immigration website at eservices.immigration.go.tz, and do not use unofficial agents. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival. Requirements differ by nationality, so check the official site for your country.
Tips are not included and are always your choice. As a guide, many travellers give their driver-guide about US$20–25 a day per group. Most lodges also have a staff tip box at reception for the rest of the team.
Prices are per person in US dollars, for 2, 4 or 6 travellers sharing the vehicle and rooms or tents, with a lower rate in the low season. The more of you travel together, the less each person pays. Travelling alone or in a bigger group? Ask us for a quote.
Yes. Lodges and camps charge extra for a room of your own, so solo travellers pay a single supplement on top of the per-person price, and the vehicle cost is not shared. Ask us for a solo quote.
